Time to make money, all the new stuff made available to everybody. You need money to get around. Time is money. Money is power. You need power to be someone. Even the old hippies forgot their ideals and got caught in the rush. The increasing competitiveness in society was a natural reaction to the increasing population and urbanization. You needed to get your elbows out there to get anywhere. The focus is on personal gain.
